Netflix tries a new spin on a beloved old series — based on an even more beloved series of books — this week when the streamer debuts its adaptation of Little House on the Prairie. It’s an obvious play for family viewing and probably the highest-profile premiere this week.
Also on tap are a few summer network staples and Jennifer Garner’s newest TV project (non-Capital One ad division). The World Cup is also getting down to its most important games — but will include a day off for the first time since the tournament began on June 11.
A couple news items from late last week before the calendar:
• I’ll have more on this when the final weekly ratings come in, but the U.S./Bosnia-Herzegovina match at the World Cup set an all-time record for an English-language soccer telecast in this country.
• Ashley Tisdale, writer Sabrina Jalees (Search Party) and Ali Wong are developing a comedy with Netflix called Toxic Moms. You may remember Tisdale writing an essay for The Cut earlier this year about “breaking up” with a mom group she deemed toxic (and which also included several other celebrities, leading to a boatload of internet chatter). It doesn’t appear to be directly based on Tisdale’s essay but is “informed” by her experiences. Hoo boy.
• There was a wedding, did you hear?
On to the dates for this week, most of which are on Thursday for whatever reason. All times are ET/PT unless noted.
Premieres
Monday
• Inspector Ellis (Acorn TV): The four-episode second season of the British will feature two cases, presumably both solved by Sharon D. Clarke’s title character.
Tuesday
• The Ghost in the Shell (Prime Video): A new anime adaptation of the long-running Japanese franchise that has also spawned films, other TV series and video games.
Wednesday
• Trying (Apple TV): Season five for the British comedy starring Esther Smith and Rafe Spall.
Thursday
• Little House on the Prairie (Netflix): Netflix’s show looks as though it will pretty closely follow the blueprint of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books and the 1970s-80s NBC show that starred Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert. Crosby Fitzgerald and Luke Bracey play Ma and Pa Ingalls; Alice Halsey plays Laura; and Skywalker Hughes plays Mary, Laura’s older sister.
• The Five Star Weekend (Peacock): Jennifer Garner plays a woman grieving her husband’s death who invites friends from different phases of her life to a weekend in Nantucket. Chloe Sevigny, Regina Hall, Gemma Chan and D’Arcy Carden also star in this adaptation of a 2023 novel by Elin Hilderbrand.
• 8 p.m. Celebrity Family Feud (ABC)
• 8 p.m.: Big Brother (CBS): As usual, episodes will also air on Sunday and Wednesday nights.
• 8 p.m.: The Real Housewives of Orange County (Bravo)
• 9 p.m.: Press Your Luck (ABC)
• 9 p.m.: The Man Will Burn (HBO/HBO Max): A four-part documentary series about the history of and people who go to Burning Man.
• 9:30 p.m.: Project Runway (Freeform/Hulu/Disney+): Tyra Banks joins the fashion competition as a judge for season 22.
Sunday
• Married at First Sight (Peacock)
• 9 p.m.: The Westies (MGM+): J.K. Simmons and Titus Welliver star in a series about the titular New York Irish gang in the 1980s.
