My one-person, occasional campaign to convince everyone that the TV calendar should sync up with the actual calendar has not yet moved the needle. Which means that it’s time for a new TV season to start.
Monday marks the officially measured beginning of the 2026-27 season, which means that the premiere calendar is crowded, and will be for the next several weeks. For a lot of reasons, the broadcast networks don’t schedule a deluge of shows in the first week anymore (though Fox is rolling out pretty much its whole lineup), but you’ll still see more than 15 network series kick off seasons in the next seven days, along with a fair number of streaming shows.
Since the list is long, I won’t spend too much time up top here. A few pieces of news from late last week:
• Prime Video canceled the action-comedy Ride or Die, starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham, after a single season — despite it being one of the surprise successes of the late summer. The show spent five weeks in Nielsen’s U.S. top 10 original streaming shows and was on Prime’s worldwide charts for several weeks as well. Paramount, which produces the series, says it’ll look for a new home for Ride or Die, but that doesn’t tend to work out very often.
• Also canceled: Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias, after five seasons. This is not so big a surprise, as its audience has tailed off pretty significantly in the last two seasons (the fifth premiered in June). At the same time, though, Netflix ordered a new series called Ladies of the House, which Sweet Magnolias showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson and star JoAnna Garcia Swisher are involved in as EPs. Garcia Swisher might take an on-screen role too.
• Netflix has extended its overall deal with Dead to Me and No Good Deed creator Liz Feldman and picked up a new dark comedy from her and co-creator Kelly Hutchinson called All the Rage. It’s got an intriguing logline: Emma and Eli are old friends who reconnect after a long period of estrangement “and find new purpose in taking down the man who tore them apart.”
