If you’re a horror/sci-fi head, you might know about From. It’s run for four seasons on MGM+ (formerly Epix), and it stars Harold Perrineau as the de factor mayor/sheriff/boss of a town that no one can leave due to supernatural forces — including monstrous creatures in the surrounding forest.
From, which also stars Catalina Sandina Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay and Elizabeth Saunders, has earned very positive reviews over its run and developed something of a cult following. But MGM+ is tiny compared with other streaming/premium cable services, so not a lot of people have watched it. Until a couple weeks ago.
The first three seasons of From were added to Netflix in a licensing deal on Oct. 19, and the show took off, debuting at No. 1 overall on Nielsen’s streaming charts for the United States that week. Season 1 was also seventh in Netflix’s worldwide rankings for the week, based on its own data. The 1.65 billion minutes of watch time in the U.S. gave From the biggest week for a library series this year in the Nielsen charts — making it an extremely good example of the Netflix Effect, i.e., the bump in visibility shows and movies can get when they’re added to the biggest streamer in the business.
From’s viewing time total might not translate to a huge audience for any given episode — it’s maybe 900,000 to 1 million streaming views (viewing time divided by run time) on average — but it’s almost certainly a good deal more people than were watching the first run. It’s a good show, and it’s good that more people have discovered it this way.
