Sorry this newsletter is hitting your inbox about 12 hours later than usual. I got out of the house last night to see Son Volt, and it was a great show. Jay Farrar and Co. did a mix of things from their new album, Sound Signal Serenades, and stuff from past records, and it flowed really nicely. “Drown” and “Route” still hit me 30-plus years after their release.
And since this is coming in a little late, I won’t spend a ton of words before getting to the streaming charts for the week of Sept. 7-13. One thing that has caught my eye — and I didn’t get to mention in last week’s streaming ratings newsletter, since it was focused on the sped-up release schedule, is that Lanterns is starting to show up on the charts — 525 million viewing minutes for this week and 500 million the week before. HBO’s internal data shows it performing quite well, and that’s being reflected some in Nielsen’s numbers now too.
As I’ve done with House of the Dragon and Euphoria in the past, I’m going to put Lanterns in the original series rankings even though Nielsen classifies it as a library show. Their reasoning is that originates on HBO’s cable channel. Mine is that it streams simultaneously on HBO Max, and most of the audience is coming to HBO shows that way. I think it’s silly not to acknowledge that.
