Netflix and the creators of Nobody Wants This put themselves on a limb by giving the series that title. Had it tanked in its first season, there would have been a bunch of jokey headlines, social media posts and whatnot all making the same “I guess nobody did want this” joke.
That of course didn’t happen: Nobody Wants This had a breakout first season, with pretty solid ratings and reviews and Emmy nominations for best comedy and stars Adam Brody and Kristen Bell. Season 2 suffered a drop in viewing (by both Netflix’s own worldwide data and Nielsen’s U.S. numbers) but still scored a best comedy series Emmy nomination.
Season 3 arrives Thursday, and Rabbi Noah (Brody) and his agnostic girlfriend Joanne (Bell) have moved in together. I haven’t watched any of the new season yet, but to judge by the trailer (which you can watch below), most of the people in their lives still seem to be questioning whether this relationship is a good idea.
Stretching a rom-com over (at least) three seasons is not the easiest thing to pull off, and comedies of all types often do a bit of a reset at the start of a new season. But — again, not having seen past the two minutes of the video above — it’s not hard to wonder if having so many people in their lives question Noah and Joanne’s choices is just re-covering old ground. I suppose you can say they’re just leaning into the premise suggested by the title.
I am, however, curious about how the show pushes forward (or doesn’t) this season. We can all find out together starting Thursday, I guess.
I’d like to hear what you think too. Starting today, I’m opening up web comments to any subscriber, so if you so inclined, feel free to leave a note there.
The calendar for this week is below. All times are ET/PT unless noted.
